GETTING STARTED WITH YAHOO! GROUPS

Making a Group Site for your EV Online course

With these directions open, open a second browser window and go to Yahoo! Groups at

http://groups.yahoo.com.  This will let you refer to the directions as you fill in the required information.

Getting a Yahoo! ID

  • First get a Yahoo! ID and email address and set up a Profile.  To do this, visit https://edit.yahoo.com/registration and sign up for an account. You DO NOT need to use your Yahoo! email to access your group, once you have set up your profile. You can choose which email address to use.

(See Getting a Yahoo ID if you need help.)

  • If you already have a Yahoo! ID and email address, just sign in.

Creating your own group

Step 1

  • Visit Yahoo! Groups at http://groups.yahoo.com (Figure 1).
  • Click on >Start a New Group.  You will need to sign in first.

Step 2

You will then see the overlay, Create New Group (Figure 2). Fill in the information:

    • Name: Choose a name and URL that will be easy for participants to remember.
    • Please do NOT use EVO as the only name. You will want to distinguish your group from others.
    • Description: Make your description short, as you will be able to add more on the front page.
    • Web Address: Make it related to your group name.  If you have spaces in your group's name, be sure to write the e-mail address as one word or use underscoring, e.g., Internet_Writing.
    • Setting:  Choose "Public" so that group members can join easily.
    • Category: We recommend "Computers & Internet" even if your session is not technology-related. EVO is all online.
    • Sub Category: Education

Then click >Next to save your information and continue.

Step 3

Complete the information on the following page, selecting what email you would like to use to receive communications (Figure 3).
    • Yahoo! Alias: Use the name you have already created when you got your Yahoo ID. If you have another ID, you can use that -- just remember which one will let you into the group!
    • Email Address: You can choose an alternate email, or the one you created when you joined Yahoo. This is where you will get your mail from the group, so be sure to check it at least daily.
    • Message Delivery: Be sure to select >Daily Digest. Otherwise, you will be swamped with emails.

Type in the Security Code, accept the Terms of Service and click >Accept and Create to finish up.

Step 4

  • You should now be on your new group page (Figure 4). You can now customize your group further. If you want a little break at this point, you can also edit your group later by returning to its address and signing in .

  • We suggest you don't invite members yet, except your co-moderator(s). You will need their email addresses. Explore the features of your group.
