Week2
Week 2 – Oct. 26 - Nov. 1
Activities
1. Read the article Stave Off These Seven Pitfalls of Distance Learning at http://www.astd.org/LC/2000/0400_sheinberg.htm
2. Keeping in mind that teachers are idea rich and time poor, explain:
3. Read the file Create a Yahoo Group. Start your Yahoo group (or other LMS) and put a link to it
4. Invite your mentor(s) to join your group and change your mentor's status to Moderator (see the file Add a Moderator). They can help you with formatting, finding a good image, color schemes, and setting up files and folders. Feel free to ask questions. Be sure to turn on all Web features, but do not allow attachments to emails. (If you need help, see the Settings document).
5. After setting up your YG, you may want to browse through some of the other Help files, e.g., Settings, Adding a Moderator, and files_and_folders. (See the YG Tutorials for the complete list--these directions are specifically oriented to EVO.)
Be sure to ask any questions in our discussion group--others will want to know. We would welcome any comments or suggestions for revisions!

Summary of Week 2
"I think it would also be wise to add a little note about the intensity of the discussions just so to inform the participants (of your session) about the sudden influx of emails. Some of the participants may unexpectedly find themselves a bit left behind."
Comments on 7 Pitfalls:
"Web-based learning and face-to-face learning are different and, accordingly, must be approached differently. If they are not, new Web-based learners will quickly feel overwhelmed, become discouraged, and drop out."
"In our sessions, we are trying to avoid pitfalls by preparing five areas. These are clearly stated and realistic goals, alternative communication modes, nibble sized tasks, exemplars and tangible outcomes."
"Another point is that motivation plays a major role in keeping participants tuned on the session."
"I will be more careful with the cultural and regional differences of the participants."
"Time zones may mean that a new participant has to wait several hours for a friendly greeting or some help - so this is something to take into account during a session."
