The Training Session in Brief

 

 

  

 

 

Training Objectives

 

By the end of the 5-week training, we expect our participants will have:

 

  • learned what EVO is
  • differentiated EVO from formal, credited online teaching
  • experienced the use of different synchronous platforms and how to use them in their own sessions
  • discussed different aspects of e-moderation
  • learned the different features of Yahoo Groups
  • created their own YG
  • uploaded their session content to their YG
  • revised and refined the syllabus for their EVO session (due date for final version, December 1st)

 


 

Pre-training (before Oct. 19)

 

- Reading: How EVO differs

- Complete the Needs Assessment survey

- Join the Moderators' YG (You will need a Yahoo ID to join

- Be sure to follow the syllabus in this wiki

- Read the 1-page document, Netiquette, and take the self-test

 

If you have led an EVO session before, think about helping to co-moderate one of the weeks of this training period. We are all volunteers and you can help!!

 

 

Week 1 (Oct. 19-25)

 

- Introductions and discussion of How EVO differs

- Upload a photo

- Setting your own YG options

- Get acquainted with your mentor--ask questions--but don't neglect the resources of our whole training group!

 

 

Week 2 (Oct. 26 - Nov. 1)

 

- Reading: Stave off these 7 Pitfalls of Distance Learning discussion

- Begin setting up your Yahoo! Group, Moodle, or other Learning Management System (LMS)

- Invite your mentor to participate with Moderator status in your LMS

- Be sure to send your YG  or other LMS address to the Moderator e-list so that others can have a look

- Opening chat - venue and time to be announced - bring your YG and other organizational questions (we'll do this one next year)

 

 

Week 3 (Nov. 2-8)

 

- Develop an expanded syllabus, load it to your YG or LMS,  and invite comments from the other Moderators

- Join Tapped In -- you may wish to set up your own virtual office

- Download and install Yahoo Messenger

- Chat 1: Chat in a virtual office. Be sure to have TI and YM both open.

 

 

Week 4 (Nov. 9-15)

 

- Refine your syllabus based on your readings and our discussions

- Explore advanced features of YG (or your own LMS)

- Visit our voice chat site (TBA) and be sure the appropriate Java plug-in is installed and your headphones and microphone are recognized.

- Chat 2: PC users will need a microphone/earphones or headset; Mac users will preferably use earphones and microphone, but may be able to get along with their built-ins.

 

 

Week 5 (Nov. 16-22)

 

- Revisit others' YGs or LMSs and discuss their new look

- Complete the Evaluation Survey (address to follow)

- Chat 3: Open discussion - venue TBA

 

 

Post-training (Nov. 23, 2009 - Jan. 2, 2010)

 

- We can't include your session in our Call for Participants unless you have a sponsor. Make sure your mentor knows what IS or TESOL group you want as sponsor(s)

- Put all the finishing touches on your session by December 1st or it can't be included in the CfP

- Stay in touch with your mentor and the EVO_Moderators YG

- Sunday chats every week at TI, noon GMT/UTC or TBA

- We are planning several presentation opportunities at TESOL Boston -- we hope you will participate!

 

 

EVO Sessions

 

- Call for Participation goes out around December 1st -- your session must be complete before then!

- Sessions begin Jan. 11 - until Feb. 21

- Registration period is Jan 4-10 (It's better not to sign anyone up until January 3rd)

- Stay in touch with EVO_Moderators YG as well as your mentor - let us know how your session is progressing

- Be sure to ask your mentor if you need help

- Regular chats continue
