The Training Session in Brief

Training Objectives

By the end of the 4-week training, we expect our moderators to have:

    1. learned what EVO is
    2. understood the differences between EVO and formal, credited online teaching
    3. experienced the use of different synchronous and asynchronous platforms and considered how to use them in their own sessions
    4. discussed (synchronously and asynchronously) various aspects of e-moderation
    5. learned the different features of Yahoo Groups (or another interactive space)
    6. created their own Yahoo Group (YG) or other interactive space to present their session
    7. uploaded their session content to a wiki or other content space
    8. revised and refined the syllabus for their session (due date for final version, December 1st)

Pre-training (before Oct. 22)

- Reading: How EVO differs

- Complete the Needs Assessment Survey

- Join the Yahoo Group

- Look through the syllabus in this wiki

- Check out 2014 EVO sessions and mentors at EVO Sessions 2014

If you have led an EVO session before, think about helping to co-moderate one of the weeks of this training period. We are all volunteers and you can help!! (It's good practice, too.)

- Introductions and discussion of How EVO differs

- Other basic readings for objective 1: Understand what EVO is and how it differs from other online learning

- Get acquainted with your mentor--ask questions--but don't neglect the resources of our whole training group: if you have a question, probably everyone else has the same one!

- Prepare the group introductions for their EVO Sessions and sharing them with the other moderators

- Participating in the Synchronous Chat #1

Week 2 (Oct. 29 - Nov. 4)

- Reading: Stave off these 7 Pitfalls of Distance Learning discussion

- Begin setting up your Learning Management System (Yahoo! Group, Moodle, or other LMS)

- Invite your mentor to participate with Moderator status in your LMS

- Joining and testing Google+ Groups

- Discussing some of the common elearning pitfalls and EVO peculiarities

- Sharing the links to your LMS address with the other EVO Moderators and discussing the reasons for choosing the online spaces for your EVO session

- Participating in the Synchronous Chat #2

Week 3 (Nov. 5-11)

- Developing your expanded syllabus in the Moderators' wiki and inviting comments from the other Moderators

- Considering online platforms and digital tools that might be helpful for EVO Sessions and sharing them with the other EVO Moderators

- Downloading and installing Skype

Participating in the Synchronous Chat #3

Week 4 (Nov. 12-18)

- Refining your syllabus based on your readings and our discussions

- Placing your revised syllabus on the EVO Sessions 2014 page (with approval of your mentor)

- Exploring advanced features of your EVO session LMS (YG/Wiki/MOODLE/EDMODO)

- Analyzing other participants' Session LMSs

- Checking tips for online moderation

Participating in the Synchronous Chat #4

Post-Training (Nov. 19 -Dec. 1)

- Revisiting others' LMSs and discussing their new look

- Completing the Evaluation Survey

- Keeping in touch with the EVO Coordinating Team to organize the last details of your EVO Session

Your session must be in the Your Sessions 2014 page in order to be included in our Call for Participation

PLEASE NOTE:

- We can't include your session in our Call for Participants unless you have a sponsor. Make sure your mentor knows what IS or TESOL group you want as sponsor(s)

- Put all the finishing touches on your session by December 1st or it can't be included in the CfP

- Stay in touch with your mentor and the EVO_Moderators YG  and ask any questions you may have lingering

- We are planning several presentation opportunities at TESOL Portland -- we hope you will participate!

EVO Call for Participants - December 2, 2013

Break (Dec. 2, 2013 - Jan. 5, 2014)

- Finish up all the little details in your syllabus, THEN

- Take a well deserved break, and get ready for the deluge of mail after the beginning of the year!

- Arrange for live chats with your mentor as needed - we are here to help.

EVO Open for Enrollment (Jan 6 - Jan 12, 2014)

- Please don't start your session until Jan. 12. That way people who expect to begin on Jan. 13 won't feel left behind.

- It's up to you if you will take late registrants. PLEASE make clear your policy on the front page of your LMS, homepage, and syllabus.

EVO Sessions (Jan. 14 - Feb. 17, 2014)

- Call for Participation goes out December 2nd -- your session materials must be complete before then!

- Sessions begin Jan. 14, and run until Feb. 17 (5 weeks)

- Registration period is Jan 6 - 12 (It's better not to sign anyone up until January 13th - You can use, for example, the File features in YG to send a letter to pending participants advising them)

- Stay in touch with the EVO_Moderators YG as well as with your mentor - let us know how your session is progressing

- Be sure to ask your mentor if you need help
