Training Objectives

By the end of the 4-week training, we expect our moderators to have:

    • learned what EVO is
    • differentiated EVO from formal, credited online teaching
    • experienced the use of different synchronous platforms and how to use them in their own sessions
    • discussed different aspects of e-moderation
    • learned the different features of Yahoo Groups (or other LMS - learning management system)
    • created their own YG or LMS to present their session
    • uploaded their session content to their YG or LMS and/or wiki
    • revised and refined the syllabus for their EVO session (due date for final version, December 1st)

Pre-training (before Oct. 24)

- Reading: How EVO differs

- Complete the Needs Assessment survey

- Join the Moderators' YG (You will need a Yahoo ID to join)

- Be sure to follow the syllabus in this wiki

- Read the 1-page document, Netiquette, and take the self-test

If you have led an EVO session before, think about helping to co-moderate one of the weeks of this training period. We are all volunteers and you can help!! (It's good practice, too.)

Week 1 (Oct. 24-30)

- Introductions and discussion of How EVO differs

- Upload a photo

- Setting your own YG options - check out the EVO-specific Help Files for settings

- Get acquainted with your mentor--ask questions--but don't neglect the resources of our whole training group: if you have a question, probably everyone else has the same one!

- Chat #1 - noon GMT at Tapped In (check TimeandDate.com for your local time)

If you are using a Learning Management system (LMS) other than Yahoo Groups, please let your mentor know immediately, and give them administrator privileges right away.

Week 2 (Oct. 31 - Nov. 6)

- Reading: Stave off these 7 Pitfalls of Distance Learning discussion

- Begin setting up your Yahoo! Group, Moodle, or other Learning Management System (LMS)

- Invite your mentor to participate with Moderator status in your LMS

- Be sure to send your YG  or other LMS address to the Moderator e-list so that others can have a look

- Chat #2- venue and time to be announced - bring your YG and other organizational questions

Week 3 (Nov. 7-13)

- Develop an expanded syllabus, load it to your YG or LMS,  and invite comments from the other Moderators

- Join Tapped In -- you may wish to set up your own virtual office or a group for your session (see our Chat Tools page)

- Download and install Skype

- Chat #3: Chat in a virtual office. Be sure to have TI and Skype both open

Week 4 (Nov. 14-20)

- Refine your syllabus based on your readings and our discussions

- Place your revised syllabus on the Your Sessions 2012 page (with approval of your mentor)

- Explore advanced features of YG (or your own LMS)

- Visit our voice chat site (TBA) and be sure the appropriate Java plug-in is installed and your headphones and microphone are recognized.

- Chat #4: PC users will need a microphone/earphones or headset; Mac users will preferably use earphones and microphone, but may be able to get along with their built-ins.

Post-Training (Nov. 20 -Dec. 1)

- Revisit others' YGs or LMSs and discuss their new look

- Complete the Evaluation Survey (address to follow)

- Chat #5: Open discussion - venue TBA - We will try to have weekly chats to help problem-solve.

Your session must be in the Your Sessions 2012 page in order to be included in our

Call for Participation

PLEASE NOTE:

- We can't include your session in our Call for Participants unless you have a sponsor. Make sure your mentor knows what IS or TESOL group you want as sponsor(s)

- Put all the finishing touches on your session by December 1st or it can't be included in the CfP

- Stay in touch with your mentor and the EVO_Moderators YG - We'll have Sunday chats every week at Tapped In, noon GMT/UTC with the Webheads - ask any questions you may have lingering

- We are planning several presentation opportunities at TESOL New Orleans -- we hope you will participate!

EVO Call for Participants - December 1, 2011

Break (Dec. 1, 2011 - Jan. 2, 2012)

- Take a well deserved break, and get ready for the deluge of mail after the beginning of the year!

- Sunday chats continue every week at Tapped In noon GMT/UTC with the Webheads

- Arrange for live chats with your mentor as needed - we are here to help

EVO Open for Enrollment (Jan 2 - Jan 8, 2012)

- Please don't start your session until Jan. 15. That way people who expect to begin on Jan. 15 won't feel left behind.  We are starting much quicker this year to solve the problem of "dead time" during the registration period.

- It's up to you if you will take late registrants. PLEASE make clear your policy on the front page of your YG or homepage.

EVO Sessions (Jan. 9 - Feb. 12, 2012)

- Call for Participation goes out December 1st -- your session materials must be complete before then!

- Sessions begin Jan. 9, and run until Feb. 12 (5 weeks)

- Registration period is Jan 2-8 (It's better not to sign anyone up until January 2nd)

- Stay in touch with the EVO_Moderators YG as well as with your mentor - let us know how your session is progressing

- Be sure to ask your mentor if you need help

- Regular chats continue every week at Tapped In noon GMT/UTC with the Webheads, and your mentor is always ready to help
